A handyman for Leongatha and South Gippsland
Leongatha Handyman looks after the repairs, fitting jobs and maintenance that build up in every home. We work across Leongatha, Korumburra, Mirboo North, Meeniyan, Inverloch and the towns and farms around them, from the Strzelecki hills down to Anderson Inlet. Send us your list, one job per line, and we will reply by email with an itemised quote. You choose what goes ahead.
Most of our visits cover several jobs at once: a door that sticks, a crack in the plaster, a towel rail that has pulled out of the tiles, a gate that drags, a TV to mount and a gutter to clear. Grouping jobs makes the most of each trip, which matters in a district where homes are spread across hills, valleys and coastline.
Why South Gippsland homes need a local handyman
South Gippsland is not like the suburbs. The weather, the ground and the homes all bring their own problems:
- Rain. The hills around Leongatha, Korumburra and Mirboo North are among the wettest farming country in Victoria. Gutters overflow, timber swells, paint peels and mould grows.
- Clay soils. Much of the district sits on reactive clay that swells when wet and shrinks when dry. Doors stick, cornices crack and gaps open around frames as the seasons change.
- Wind. Exposed hilltops and coastal towns take strong south-westerly winds. Fences lean, gates swing, flyscreens tear.
- Salt. Along the coast at Inverloch, Venus Bay and Tarwin Lower, salt air rusts hardware and sand fills sliding door tracks.
- Trees. Mirboo North and the Strzelecki hills are surrounded by tall trees. Gutters fill with leaves and storms bring down branches.
- Older homes. Many towns have weatherboard homes built in the early to mid twentieth century, with timber windows, lath and plaster walls and verandas that need careful repair.
A handyman who knows these conditions brings the right fixings, the right sealants and the right advice.

The homes we work on
Weatherboards
South Gippsland’s towns grew with dairying, the railway and, at Korumburra and nearby, coal mining. Many homes from those years are timber weatherboards with high ceilings, timber windows, verandas and plaster walls. We repair rather than replace where we can, matching existing profiles and details.
Brick veneers
Homes from the 1970s to the 1990s in Leongatha, Korumburra and Inverloch are often brick veneer. Doors, cupboards, bathrooms and fences from that era are now due for attention.
New homes
Growing towns like Leongatha and Nyora have new estates. New homes need TVs mounted, shelving, blinds, flat-pack furniture and outdoor jobs like clotheslines and letterboxes.
Farmhouses
Farmhouses take the weather head-on. Verandas, gutters, doors and house yard fences are common jobs.
Holiday houses
Coastal homes need protection from salt, sand and damp.
Helping people stay at home
Many South Gippsland residents want to stay in their own homes as they get older. Grab rails beside toilets and in showers, step rails, lever handles and small changes to steps and paths make a real difference. We fix rails securely into studs or masonry. For larger modifications, an occupational therapist assessment is a good first step.
Getting a home ready to sell
Before listing, small repairs help: patching walls, touching up paint, fixing doors, re-siliconing bathrooms, tidying gardens and pressure washing paths. We can work through a list from your agent or building inspector, where the items are within handyman scope.
Doing the job properly
- Fixings chosen for the wall: plasterboard, brick, weatherboard or lath and plaster.
- Mould removed before new silicone goes on.
- Patches primed before paint.
- Timber sealed and painted to resist the weather.
- Rust-resistant hardware near the coast.

About Leongatha and South Gippsland
Leongatha is the main town of South Gippsland Shire, sitting among green dairy hills between the Strzelecki Ranges and the coast. It is a working town with a hospital, schools, a busy main street, the saleyards and the dairy industry close by, and it is known for its annual Daffodil Festival each spring. The Great Southern Rail Trail runs from the town towards Koonwarra, Meeniyan and Foster, and the region’s beaches at Inverloch, Venus Bay and Wilsons Promontory are within easy reach.
Homes across the district are just as varied: weatherboard cottages near the town centre, brick veneer homes from the 1960s to the 1990s, new estates on the edges of town, farmhouses in the hills, mud-brick and timber homes around Mirboo North, and beach houses along the coast. Each brings its own maintenance needs.
What South Gippsland weather does to a house
South Gippsland is green for a reason. Rain is frequent from autumn to spring, the hills are often foggy, frost settles on clear winter nights and strong westerly winds blow across the ridges. On the coast, salt air and sand add to the wear.
These conditions mean gutters block and overflow, timber rots at ground level and around windows, doors swell and stick, paint peels, mould grows in bathrooms and wardrobes, and fences and gates loosen in the wind. Regular maintenance prevents small problems from turning into expensive ones. We plan outdoor work for drier spells and use materials that suit the local climate, including marine-grade hardware for coastal homes.
Jobs we do most often
- clearing gutters and downpipes on houses and sheds
- repairing and rehanging doors, and replacing locks and handles
- freeing sticking windows and replacing sash cords
- replacing rotten weatherboards, sills, fascias and deck boards
- patching plaster and painting walls, ceilings and trims
- resealing showers, baths and benchtops
- treating mould and improving ventilation in wet areas
- mounting TVs, shelves, mirrors and art securely
- assembling flat-pack and outdoor furniture
- installing grab rails, handrails and other safety aids
- repairing fences and gates near the house
- building shelving and storage in garages, sheds and laundries
- re-meshing flyscreens and repairing screen doors
- pressure-cleaning paths, decks and outdoor areas
For property managers and landlords
Rental homes in Leongatha and nearby towns need reliable repairs between tenants and after routine inspections. We work through lists from property managers, arrange access with tenants, and send photos and a short report when the job is done. Common rental jobs include locks, blinds, doors, screens, patching and painting, silicone, and minor fixes noted on condition reports.

For local businesses
Shops, cafes, offices, clinics and community organisations across South Gippsland need practical help too. We fit shelving and displays, repair doors and locks, assemble furniture, mount screens and signage brackets, and handle minor repairs. We can work outside opening hours to keep disruption low.
For farms and rural properties
On dairy farms and lifestyle blocks, the house and its surrounds often come last. We take care of house repairs, gutters, gates and fences near the house, shed shelving and doors, and getting worker or family cottages ready for new occupants. Boundary fencing and large farm structures are for specialist contractors.
Holiday homes on the coast
Many owners of holiday homes at Inverloch, Venus Bay and nearby coastal towns live elsewhere. We offer pre-summer and post-summer visits and storm checks, work through your list with key access and send photos so you know your property is in good shape.
Safe, licensed and within scope
A handyman can do a wide range of work, but not everything. Electrical, plumbing, gas and structural work must be done by licensed tradespeople, and some building work needs a permit. We are clear about the boundaries, and we will point you to the right trade when a job is outside our scope. We work safely at heights, use the right fixings for each wall type and leave the site clean.
Preparing for a visit
To make the most of a visit, write down everything on your list, even small items, and take a few photos. Let us know about access, pets, parking and any materials you have already bought. Grouping jobs into one visit is the most efficient way to work, especially for homes outside town.
Fire and storm readiness
Summer brings fire danger across South Gippsland, and storms can strike any time of year, as Mirboo North saw in February 2024. Before summer we clear gutters, tidy around the house, move stored materials away from walls and seal gaps where embers can enter. After storms we help with small repairs and tidy-ups near the house; roofs, large trees and structural damage need specialists and, where relevant, your insurer.
Supporting people to stay at home
Many people in the district want to stay in their own homes as they age or recover from injury. Grab rails, handrails, lever handles, step edges and better storage make a real difference. We install aids to occupational therapist recommendations where provided, and work patiently and respectfully in people’s homes.
Older homes in town
Leongatha’s older streets have weatherboard homes from the early and middle twentieth century, many on timber stumps. As stumps move, doors catch, windows jam and cracks appear in plaster and cornices. We free and rehang doors, repair windows, patch cracks and repaint, and tell you if a restumper or building inspector should take a look. Keeping original features such as panelled doors, sash windows, timber floors and decorative mouldings is part of good maintenance, and we repair rather than replace wherever it makes sense.
Newer homes and estates
New estates around Leongatha, Korumburra and Nyora bring a different kind of work: setting up a home from scratch. We mount TVs, hang curtains and blinds, assemble furniture, fit shelving and garage storage, and install clotheslines and letterboxes. As homes age past their first few years, we fix the small defects that appear, such as doors that no longer latch, cracked silicone and loose fittings.
How we keep things tidy
We protect floors and furniture, clean up dust and offcuts, and take away small amounts of waste from our work. You are left with a finished job, not a mess to deal with.
